Elections. Joy.

So, that's two votes for a bunch of idiots who have no chance of actually winning (amazing how the first description doesn't narrow it down at all, is it?).
Business as usual I'd say. But I didn't even bother with my tactical first vote this time.
Wohoo.

And wow. Voting machines. Highly technical. That's why two people's only job was to explain: "Press the button for the first vote. Then press the button for the second vote. Then press the blue 'Vote' button. To change anything press 'correct'. You can also simply follow the instructions on the screen." And before you enter the booth you get told again "First vote, Second vote, blue button".
How hard can it be?

You got a voting machine? So was there still paper involved or not?

[identity profile] xkatjafx.livejournal.com 2005-09-18 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, no paper nor pen. We're highly advanced. Or at least think we are.

Mmm, also kein Ausdrück als Sicherheit?

Hmm.

wow, you're really modern over there in the wild west. since i've done postal votes pretty much ever since i'm allowed to vote, i have no idea what election-day-voting over here looks like. i guess it's still pen and paper, though.

PS.: did you get a receipt?

[identity profile] honeycakehorse.livejournal.com 2005-09-18 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I can just imagine my grandma (86) trying to operate a voting machine. She'd need any and all instructions she could get.

Agree with you on the boring everyone part. As I said, even if it looked the same, I know some people would still need help (especially when they haven't ever used a touch screen), but to assume a twenty-something isn't able to deal with that is stupid.

I really had to use a pencil. Oh, well...

But I didn't even bother with my tactical first vote this time.

Technical first vote? I have nly heard of technical second votes so far...

Ah, I see. Yes, giving the Erststimme to a candidate of the large parties is a good ideas. Taktische Zweitstimme refers to voting for the 'little parties' e.g. FDP and Greens, so they get into the Bundestag to support the big ones. I heard the FDP and Greens are a bit worried about this today...

Electronic voting machines may be all slick and nifty, but they really should have given you a receipt. We've had a lot of controversy about electronic voting here, since they're really easy to hack into and change the results. Plus all the machines were made and installed by a company that openly supports Bush, and a secret company memo was found that said "Let's win this one for him." I know it's not as likely to happen there, but I still say paper ballots are the way to go.
