Now that I've caught up on my flist, what confuses me the most is the insistence of some people that reading the downloads somehow lessens the experience or turns you into an disgusting, deceiving slime-creature from mars.

These photos certainly weren't easy to read in parts, but just because I read it on the screen without curling up on my couch, doesn't mean I didn't enjoy reading it and only did it because I wanted to be there first.
I don't intend to spoil anyone with it. I will still be giving JKR the money for the book and probably the audiobook as well [and I will be searching for a pdf of it later on too (because ctrl+f is my best friend some days)].
I don't see how this is anything but my personal decision.

Especially I don't see it as any disrespect for the author or publisher. To illustrate, selling books before the official publication date if they've already been delivered happens quite often with the less hyped English books in German bookshops (I often got my new Pratchett's one or two weeks before people in the UK). AFAIKT this isn't done out of disrespect either, but because, really, no one cares that much.
Because of the hype around HP and the spoiler-trolls I can see the need for more caution. But just because some of us want to know a few days earlier what happens, doesn't mean we want to spit on JKR, insult her publishers and refuse to talk with other fans forevermore.
For me, it's really just personal preference if you'd rather read it a bit later but at the same time as the majority of the population and be able to start debating every little thing right away, or if you want to know what happens NOW and will have to content yourself to only squee in private until the rest of the world has caught up.

Except on Monday evening I caved and got a copy of the allegedly leaked DH (carpet version - that name makes me laugh every time). It took me until now to read it, mainly because dear gods, reading some of these photos was *hard*. My traditional first-read-through reaction post is here but will stay private until Saturday. Should it turn out fake, I'll still turn it public just to publically show I've been fooled on second thought, it's lj-cut and spoiler warned. It can be public. Plus, I need it to check on facts when I'm not at home and logged in.
No spoilers from me either until the book is out. But I liked it. The epilogue was entirely too much for me but otherwise I liked it.

If what I read really turns out to be a fake, I have the deepest respect for the faker. Because that's such a lot of work, it boggles the mind that anyone would put that much work into creating a five-day hoax.

And no, I don't feel bad for having read this. JKR certainly will get my money and if I can in any way arrange it, I will be at the midnight release. (One of the main reasons for reading this beforehand were that I don't know for sure if I can make it. And no way am I going to wait until Monday without reading *something*.)
I don't intend to spoil anyone and enjoyed reading.
Does anything else matter?

CAVE: I've read the allegedly leaked (carpet) copy of DH. When I say spoiler, I mean it.
I guess 'spoilers for DH' does cover it. In a way. )

Actually, I do have things to say.

For example that I've seen about four minutes of new Dr Who. And now want my DVDs to arrive and new episodes right *now*

Or that I realized that my exams start next week and maybe I should start studying.
(How exams manage to sneak up on me like that, I'll never know.)

Or that I hate the German voices for the HP movies so very, very much.
(I also hat the cinemas in Leipzig that don't show the undubbed version at all in the first week. What's the use of getting a movie a day before everyone else if you can't really enjoy it?)

Or that looking for a place/topic for a dissertation isn't good for my blood-pressure at all. But not knowing what I'm going to do in 6 months isn't good for it either.

And something completely random as a finishing touch:
Exactly how crazy does donating plasma once a week, because I like watching my blood in tubes and filters so much, make me?

Where does half the fandom get the impression that Harry is cheating by using a book with notes in it?

They are allowed to use their book while brewing and are supposed to have read up on the potion they are preparing in class.
And in written tests, I doubt they are allowed to use their books anyway, so the notes won't be any help to him there.
The only difference I see between Harry and a Ravenclaw (in this instance) is that the Ravenclaw would have made the notes himself - and probably not in the book, but on a spare bit of paper.

Having better reference material is rarely considered cheating. No matter how much of an advantage it gives you.

These are just so I can remember what I thought while I read the book the first time. I did this for the last book as well.
I just scribbled down what came to my mind while reading. There are no theories or arguments here. But there is an overuse of exclamation marks and completely irrelevant thoughts.
My notes on the first read - wow are those incoherent (Note for the next book. Write down the page and not the time you read it) )

And my thoughts while reading it the second time - might even be understandable for someone else but me )

On a non-Hp note:
Why is there so much going on in the Small Animal hospital today? It's a weekend and I want to sneak in an use their internet to discuss HBP. How inconsiderate of them to not take that in account when talking with patients.

And I'm going to blame my lack of sleep for the fact that not being able to open the KY-Jelly tube with one hand and only barely with two hands amuses me so much.

Oh. My. God.
That woman is pure evil.
What do you mean, you've not yet read the book? )

Non-spoiler reactions:

  • I love this book. I broke my brain, but I love it.
  • I think it has seen the editor OotP needed.
  • I love the plot.
  • I want to kill JKR for doing this to me.
  • I want the last book right now.
  • I want to read lots and lots of AU fanfic.

*needs to read discussions about this book immediately*

Wow.

It seems my reward for a day of diligently reading my books is a look at the HBP covers.

Talk about instant gratification. (What? I'm easy to please)
