But what's the point?
Is there any rational reason for me to clutter up my brain with information like the exact percentage of crude protein in lupin? (There's a HP-smut quote somewhere in this sentence, I just know it.)
I know the approximate range, I know where to look should I need the exact figures, I even know what I can use the information for - there's no reason to ask for anything else.
I wonder if the excuse "I had to spam my LJ" will be acceptable should they ask anyway.
[ETA:Great, now I've reached the whole BSE/bone meal/EU laws debacle.I really want to do something else now]

I figure that if there comes a time in your life when you are needing to know the exact percentage on a regular basis, you'll remember it (after having looked it up often enough). Just as you'll remember all the other info that you use regularly. And sure, it's possible to memorize huge amounts of things (to pass exams, for example), but the fact is that you *won't* be able to remember all those things forever, and if, down the road, you forget and don't know where to look them up, that's when you'd really be in trouble. So, research skills = good; rote memorization for its own sake = not so good.
Just my opinion, anyway. You're welcome to tell your professor that you had this advice from a cheeky American with no veterinary experience whatsoever, if you think that would help. ::grin::
And I think you're right about the smut potential for that sentence, but I just woke up and my brain isn't functioning well enough yet to come up with one. ;-)
