The same thing that makes them eat not only cat feces, but CAT LITTER.
Ugh, once Woofles jumped up onto my lap to give a kiss, and I smelled Fresh Step on his breath! >_O
Needless to say, he did not get a kiss.
In fact, his litterbox raiding habit is the big reason we crate him when we're not home. Nothing seems to dissuade him (bitter apple, scolding, remote correction with things like pennies in a can, adding msg to the cats' food to make it taste bad, even tobasco and wasabi smeared on the feces...this dog LOVES wasabi mustard!), and since he's the same size as the cats, and one of our cats is really old and doesn't jump as well as she used to, we can't really babygate them off either. :\
I'm seriously considering one of those indoor 'invisible fence' type things that has a 4 ft field...he goes in it (not heeding the warning tone), he gets a small shock. Does not affect cats.
It's not so much that he eats the feces that bothers me, it's the fact that in the process of eating them he shreds them and scatters them ALL OVER THE LIVING ROOM!
I also realize I'm probably fighting a losing battle against instinct, as feces and vomit and all kinds of yummies like it are a natural part of a dog's diet, but JEEZ...not in my house it's not. :D
