I could explain the details, but that would involve swearing.

If I hadn't already been looking for a practical way to back up my photos, I would be doing so now.

At least they're "recovered" photos . . . rather than GONE FOREVER!

After having two issues with lost photos (one which was my stupidity; one which was really not my fault, but still sucked), I've taken to backing up my stuff fairly carefully. The system that works best for me is that I burn all my photos onto DVDs as soon as possible AND I also save them on an external harddrive (I have a 300 gig one which has proven to be plenty of space for me for the past few years, anyway). I don't keep all the photos on the external drive - just the best ones. Having all those CDs is kind of a storage issue. Well, not storage so much, as they really don't take up a lot of space. But the idea of trying to find a photo, or group of photos, when I need it . . . that's a challenge. Still, at least I know that all the photos are THERE.

I'm also started to go back and re-burn some of my CDs/DVDs from several years ago, since I've heard that disks can "go bad" after a while. What I really want to work out is a system for keeping and organizing my best photos. Maybe one of these days I'll sit down and so something like that.

Anyhow . . . I'm glad that you were able to recover your photos! Losing stuff sucks. :)

DEFINITELY start burning photos to DVDs! The other reason I like to do this is that I like to edit my photos, and at least once, I accidentally edited a photo (one I REALLY LIKED), and made it small to post on the web . . . and overwrote my original. So now, that photo only exists in a tiny format. If I'd had it on DVD, there is always a backup of the original. Plus, like you said, it soothes the paranoia. :D

My backup system is like this: Every three years I get a new work laptop, and buy the old one for private use for little money. I don't clean up the hard drive, but copy everything to the new laptop. Probably not a good solution, but involves very little work...
